Former Framlingham College pupil Jon Watt wins Britcar Sprint Championship title at Brands Hatch alongside Kris Prosser

Jon Watt – along with his team-mate Kris Prosser – rounded off a debut campaign in the Britcar Sprint Championship by wrapping up the title.

It was announced in March of this year that Laxfield-based racer Watt had secured himself a deal to race in the Moss Motorsport BMW M3 alongside his fellow driver Prosser.

And the pair combined to winning effect at the first time of asking, heading into the final round of action at Brands Hatch with a 42-point lead and 63 left to battle it out for.

However, while the pair would be celebrating come the end of the two-day meeting of night racing, it was far from a straightforward affair as they were forced to retire from race one because of a gearbox issue.

To make matters worse, closest rivals John Clonis, Chris Bentley and Rob Gilham moved to within 24 points of the championship lead.

To seal the title Watt and Prosser needed to complete 10 laps of the track in the second race – something that was in doubt for a while when their car spun on some oil at Druids Corner on the final lap with former Framlingham College pupil Watt at the wheel.

Nevertheless, Watt recovered to bring the car home third in class and, after a nervy wait to ensure all technical requirements had been met, the debutant duo were confirmed champions by a slender margin of seven points.

It rounded off a 2018 campaign to remember for the pairing, which included six class pole positions, seven class race fastest laps, 10 class podiums, six class wins and one overall podium – all of which were achieved in a class four car.
