Diss plot Vixens return

Several years after the team was folded, the Diss Vixens Ladies’ side is to be resurrected.

The lack of girls’ youth teams, and therefore a pathway into senior rugby, was a leading factor in the decision to withdraw the Vixens.

However, Diss now has a thriving youth section for girls at under-13, under-15 and under-18 age groups.

And that was enough for club officials to give the green light to the prospect of starting up a senior team for ladies again.

“The team sort of died a natural death,” said Alan Carpenter, who will initially coach the side.

“There was no real youth section, and so no players were feeding into the side.

“ Now, the youth set-up is brilliant but girls are reaching the age of 17 or 18 and are having to move to another club to play rugby.

“It is frustrating when you put the hard work in with a youth player and then they have to move elsewhere. Now there will be a clear pathway.”

It is hoped the team will be entered into an Eastern Counties Merit League, which will see them pitted against opponents of similar ability.

Training starts at Mackenders on Wednesday, August 15 and players over the age of 18 and of all abilities are welcome to attend (7.30pm).
