Harleston Magpies Hockey Club’s Under-14 and Under-12 Girls through to England Hockey National Finals
Harleston Magpies Hockey Club’s Under-14 Girls are eagerly anticipating a big weekend as they look forward to the England Hockey National Finals in Reading on Sunday.
The team secured the coveted title of regional champions back on March 24, which in turn saw them secure a spot in the National Finals for the second year running.
They beat Spencer Hockey Club from London, as well as both Amersham & Chalfont and Southgate, to get through to the showpiece event.
The girls will now face the seven best teams in England, including Sevenoaks, Repton and Cambridge City, with the winner going on to be crowned the top team in the country.
The team’s coach and manager Jim Menzies said: “The girls have been fantastic all season with a 100 per cent record through all the qualifiers.
“We are so pleased to be able to play in the National Finals again, having also qualified last year.
“The girls have trained hard over the last six weeks with plenty of variety in the sessions so we have to say a big thank you to those others from within the Magpies’ family that helped out.
“We are all looking forward to the weekend and testing ourselves against the best in the country.”
And the Under-14s will not be the club’s only side in National Finals action in the near future.
The Under-12 Girls will also be pitting themselves against the country’s top teams when they head to Nottingham on May 18.
They got through in dramatic circumstances last month thanks to a penalty flicks victory over Southgate, with the game having finished at two goals apiece.
It was 2-2 during the penalty flicks, but then Sevenoaks rattled the frame of the goal with their third, leaving Magpies to step up and coolly win the Eastern Regional title.
The youth committee’s Heather Brand said: “This is an outstanding win for our girls, who have been a strong side all season.
