Ipswich Town sign Luke Thomas on loan from Championship side Barnsley

Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Luke Thomas on loan from Barnsley for the remainder of the 2020/21 season, writes Jacob Henderson.

The 21-year-old wide midfielder, who can also operate as a forward, penned a deal at Portman Road this afternoon, having trained with his Blues team-mates at Playford Road for the first time this morning.

Thomas was part of the youth setup at West Bromich Albion before moving to Cheltenham Town where he turned professional.

He left the National League Robins in 2016 to join Derby County where he then had loan spells away from Pride Park with Gloucester City and Coventry City.

Having made two league appearances with the Rams, Luke signed for Barnsley in 2019.

The Soudley-born wideman scored the winner for Barnsley on his debut against Fulham in August 2019 and made a total of 42 appearances for The Tykes in the 2019/20 season.

He has chalked up a total of 22 appearances this term, and most recently featured for Barnsley in a home clash with Swansea on January 16.

Thomas, who has twice represented England U20s, will wear the number 27 shirt during his time with Town.

Having been under 21 at the turn of the year, he does not count towards the allowance of over-age players on the salary cap Town are operating within.
