Diss Town gave their hopes of avoiding relegation from Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division a huge boost after securing a 1-0 win away at Whitton United.

Defender Ben Lewis struck the decisive blow to seal the Tangerines a first win in five games in all competitions and leave them nine points adrift of 17th placed Wivenhoe Town, one place above the drop zone.

In the First Division, Debenham LC saw their inconsistent form continue as they were held to a goalless draw away at second-bottom Needham Market Reserves. The stalemate leaves the Hornets in eighth place.

Meanwhile, Diss RFC continued their Norfolk Cup quest after securing a hard-fought 24-20 victory over Norwich.

Ipswich Town’s realistic hopes of a top two spot evaporated in the early kick-off on Tesside as they went down to a 4-1 defeat at new league leaders Middlesbrough.

Daryl Muprhy had equalised Daniel Ayala’s early header before Albert Adomah put them 2-1 ahead going into half-time and on-loan Chelsea player Patrick Bamford hit two in the second half.

Brentford’s loss later in the day seeing the Tractor Boys remain a point off the play-offs in seventh.

Norwich City remain fifth after sharing a 1-1 home draw with fellow promotion chasers Derby County.

Cameron Jerome had put the Canaries ahead in the first half following an eye-catching move, but goalkeeper John Ruddy fumbled a corner into his own net shortly after the hour mark.
