Tangerines let two-goal lead slip in 2-2 draw against Woodbridge
THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE
Woodbridge Town 2
Diss Town 2
Diss Town let a two-goal lead slip as they had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw away at Woodbridge Town on Saturday.
It turned out to be a frustrating day for the Tangerines, who conceded an own goal, hit the post twice and missed a penalty in the dying minutes of this Thurlow Nunn League First Division clash.
Diss had the edge in the opening exchanges, with Kyle Downes coming close to breaking the deadlock with a dipping shot from 25 yards, before Callum Olpin’s effort from a similar distance forced a good save out of Woodbridge keeper Harry Lay-Fulcher.
The visitors found a breakthrough in the 28th minute, after Olpin found Jamie George at the far post, who raced in to turn the ball over the line.
Diss doubled their lead eight minutes later when Downes was held and subsequently pulled down in the penalty area, and Jason Armes converted the penalty.
Olpin rifled a low shot across the area that missed the far post, before George hit the post with Lay-Fulcher beaten, as the Tangerines looked to add to their 2-0 advantage.
It looked to be only a matter of time before Diss would grab a third goal, however Ross Potter’s side handed Woodbridge a lifeline just before the break.
Alex Walpole misjudged his header and the ball found the back of his own net to cut his side’s lead in half.
Diss came close to going 3-1 up when George struck the upright of the home goal, but it was Woodbridge who scored next to get back on level terms.
A slick exchange of passes culminated in Callum Sinclair firing a low shot past William Izod in the 88th minute.
Potter’s men were handed an opportunity to save the day when they were awarded a penalty, but Walpole’s penalty cleared the crossbar.
Diss host Great Yarmouth Town on Monday (3pm).
