Tangerines hold firm to clinch hard-fought victory

Diss Town 2

Norwich CEYMS 1

Diss Town continued their winning ways during the pre-season with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Norwich CEYMS at Brewers Green Lane.

Kyle Downes and Ben Lewis were unavailable for the encounter against the Anglian Combination Premier Division outfit, but new signing Jamie George, a former Norwich United and Wroxham striker, made his debut.

The early exchanges were fairly even, but it was Danny Self who put the Tangerines in front after just eight minutes as his well-judged header squeezed past the Norwich CEYMS keeper’s hand and under the crossbar.

Shortly after George was in the right place at the right time to mark his debut with a goal from close-range in the 27th minute, doubling the home side’s advantage.

The visitors pulled a goal back in the 38th minute when one of their midfielders ghosted through the static home defence to meet a free kick with a header that gave Chris Bird no chance in the Tangerines’ goal.

The visitors started the second half strongly and had more possession in the early stages as they went in search of an equaliser.

Their pressure nearly told midway through the half as the visitors were unlucky when a header hit the right-hand post and was scrambled away by the Diss defence.

The Tangerines best chance to extend their lead fell to George in the 74th minute, when he met a cross from the right, but he was unable to direct his header on target.

Norwich continued to pour forward and created further opportunities but a host of excellent saves from Bird ensured the home side kept their slender lead intact to secure victory.

Diss return to pre-season action tomorrow when they entertain Saffron Walden at Brewers Green Lane (3pm) before concluding their friendly fixtures schedule with a trip to Harleston Town on Tuesday evening (6:30pm).

n Goals from Callum Olpin and Jamie George helped the Tangerines to a 2-1 win in their latest friendly against Mulbarton Wanderers on Tuesday night.
