Spixworth 0

Saturdays clash between the division’s two in form sides ended in a stalemate, with all the drama coming in the last five minutes as Town keeper John Howes saved a penalty from the division’s top scorer Jordan Rocastle to earn his side a point against the league leaders.

The opening exchanges of the game were even, with goalmouth action at a premium.

On a difficult surface, both sides struggled to get any rhythm into their games, with the match constantly being halted due to numerous fouls.

The best chance of the half fell to the visitors when Rocastle broke clear and slid the ball past Howes only to see his effort come back off the post. That was the closest either side came in an opening period which was perhaps shaded by the visitors.

The second half continued in similar vein to the first, with neither side able to carve out that important clear opening.

The best chance fell to Town’s Scott Woodgate as he broke clear on goal, but his effort went wide of the far post.

With the clock ticking down, the game began to open up and in the 85th minute the Spixworth goalkeeper fumbled the ball on the edge of his box.

However, just as Town forward James Pipe was about to nick the loose ball to put into the unguarded net, the keeper pushed the ball away with his hand. Amazingly, the referee waved play on, much to Town’s frustration,

Spixworth counter-attacked and the forward’s shot was adjudged to have struck Town defender Calum Burkes on the arm, and to compound Town’s annoyance, a penalty was awarded.

Rocastle, who has scored 42 goals for Spixworth in just 30 outings, stepped up to take the resultant spot kick.

However, his effort was turned away to safety by Howes in the Harleston goal, for both sides to go home with a point in a fair result.
