Departing Debenham LC chairman Kevin Snell has backed his successor Steve Sherwood to help the club progress.

At the end of last season Snell announced he was stepping down as chairman, ending an involvement with the Thurlow Nunn League First Division club which has spanned almost 20 years.

The Hornets held an AGM at their Friends Meadow home on Monday night, where it was revealed that Sherwood would be taking over from Snell as chairman.

“Steve’s been on the committee at the club for the last year or two years and is a very good chap,” Snell said.

“He’s really into his football and has lots of energy, which is good because he’s going to need that and I think he is exactly what the football club needs at the moment.

“He’s got to know a lot of people locally and is respected very highly. Everyone is behind him at the club and I think he will do a good job.”

This year marks the 25-year anniversary since the Suffolk club were formed, originally under the guise of Debenham Angels back in 1991.

Debenham began life in the Touchline Suffolk and Ipswich League Division Seven, and several promotions later found themselves on the cusp of senior football.

In 2005 the club were accepted into the Eastern Counties League, where the club have remained ever since.

“Being able to maintain the club in the Thurlow Nunn League was some achievement, I suppose,” said Snell when reflecting on his personal highlights while in charge.

“I leave with the club as an established Thurlow Nunn League First Division side. Also winning the Knockout Cup (in 2013-14) was a high point during my time there.

“It’s the club’s only senior trophy, so that stands out too.”

During the AGM, Pip Alden also stepped down from the committee, with Mal Girling and Nicola Stanmore now sharing the role of vice chairman at the club.

Pam Hewitt has replaced Nigel French as the treasurer, while Sue Clarke is succeeded by Lauren Squirrell as minutes secretary.
