Debenham LC manager confident new signings will give his side an extra edge during 2020/21 season
Manager Guy Hayes believes the options are at his disposal for Debenham LC to improve upon their performance from the shortened 2019/20 campaign.
The Hornets were ninth in the Thurlow Nunn League First Division North when Covid-19 halted proceedings in March, and would have finished seventh had the Football Association opted to go down the points per game route, as opposed to null and void.
All in all it was a positive season for Hayes’ side, but he is hopeful the recent new signings will help to give Debenham an extra edge, particularly in the tighter games.
“Every side wants to do better than they did the year before and we are no different,” said Hayes, who has recruited the likes of Matt Aldis, Anthony Johnson and Jay Cole during the summer.
“Last season was pretty positive overall. We were good defensively up until Christmas but struggled to score goals, and then after that it flipped.
“This summer has been about finding the right balance and I think we have done that.
“We’ve lost a couple of players we wanted to keep but that has allowed us to freshen things up a bit.
“When you look at the squad now it has quality, and plenty of strength in depth.
“The players that have come in, some of those have won promotion and that will help the lads that were already here.
“We haven’t drawn a lot of games in the last 18 months. The new signings will hopefully help to turn defeats into draws, and those rare draws into victories.
“If we can do that, we should be set for a good season.”
Debenham open up their First Division North season at home to Fakenham tomorrow (3pm).
The Ghosts were on the edge of the promotion places before the Covid-19 lockdown, but in the one meeting between the sides last term Debenham chalked up a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Jake Conway and Andrew Crowe.
Debenham will also be away on September 12 and 15 at Downham Town and Diss Town respectively, with their first home fixture scheduled for September 15 against Norwich CBS.
