Scole United are the star performers on opening day of new season
Scole United started their 2020/21 Anglian Combination Premier Division campaign in style on Saturday with a 6-2 home win over Thorpe St Andrew.
It was largely a new look Scole side that started the contest, with one of their summer additions – Jake McDowall – taking centre stage by scoring an opening day hat-trick from the substitute’s bench.
The hosts broke the deadlock when the visiting goalkeeper could only parry Ashley Baxter’s shot, leaving the same player to turn in the rebound from close range.
A rare Thorpe attack saw them equalise, but Scole took a 2-1 lead into the break thanks to Ben Norton-Hugman’s back-post header from Dave Coleman’s cross.
McDowall made an instant impact in the second half when he scored with his first touch, before turning provider for James Harrison to produce a smart finish.
McDowall then completed his trio haul within 10 minutes and while the visitors pulled another goal back before the final whistle, it did little to dampen the Scole mood.
