Relegation fears are eased following a welcome win

by 114 runs

Diss Cricket Club eased their Premier Division relegation fears by sealing a welcome 114-run success over Downham at Rectory Meadow.

Downham captain Lanchester won the toss and asked Diss to bat first on a wicket that looked like it would aid the bowling side.

And it was to prove the case as the visitors struck early, removing Simon Cooper (0) in the first over.

In-form David Tooke joined captain James Wilby and the former set about trying to stamp his authority on the game. Tooke mustered a few delightful boundaries before he hit a lifting delivery off Sharp to mid-off.

Wilby (32) was joined by senior statesman Andy Horobin (13) but after a few boundaries he was adjudged lbw to Harwood.

When Wilby fell to Barnard, Diss were hoping that the partnership of Rob Tooke and Chris Cooper would help build a healthy score. However, when Cooper (3) fell, it left Robert Tooke and young Tom Davey to rebuild the innings. The pair put on 40 before Davey fell for a very mature 18.

After Mark Williamson came and went for another duck, Will Dawson joined Tooke. The later appeared to be on a one-man mission and punished any wayward bowling. Unfortunately for Diss he was then bowled by the impressive Todd for an important 43.

After Pierce Fletcher came and went without troubling the scorers, Diss were struggling on 152-9 but Robbie West joined the impressive Will Dawson (27) and together they changed the momentum of a match, putting on 55 for the last wicket as the hosts finished on 207.

Diss could not have asked for a better start in reply as West removed opener Harrison (0) in the first over.

Downham then slumped to 14-2 as a West got the wicket of Tansley (6). But the Downham pair of Yates and overseas star Kelly built a solid 50 partnership.

The game was then turned in its head with the introduction of off-spinner Chris Cooper, as he and Williamson masterfully span their webs and removed the Downham middle and lower order.

Cooper struck first to remove Yates for 14, before Williamson had Kelly superbly caught by Wilby for 34.

Cooper then removed the dangerous Harwood for eight, again caught by Wilby and when Williamson bowled Lanchester (2) the match really swang in Diss’ favour.

That momentum continued with the home side as Cooper then claimed two wickets in two balls to reduce Downham to 83-8 at drinks.

Williamson then finished a fantastic spell, picking up the ninth wicket in his final over.

Williamson finished with fantastic figures of 3-22 from his 13 over spell.

Cooper (4-40) was then denied his five-wicket haul by the returning West, who Trapped Sharp lbw to wrap up a complete performance from the Diss bowlers and a welcome victory.

It leaves Diss sixth on 202 points, 42 above the drop zone ahead of another home tie tomorrow, as they welcome title-chasing Sprowston to Rectory Meadow (1pm) in their penultimate match.

n Diss B (95) secured a 57-run win over Hardingham B in Stadia Norfolk League Division Five East. James Skilleter (24), Rory Taylor (24), Will Ward (4-12) and Ashley Cotton (3-9) all made strong contributions.
