Noah Blair wins five races for the Diss Otters at the Nifty Fifties Gala
Diss Otters’ Noah Blair hit the jackpot with five wins at the Nifty Fifties Gala.
The Otters took a large team of 47 swimmers to last weekend’s event at Waterworld in Thetford, where competitors were given the chance to compete in 50m races in all four strokes, plus a 100m Medley.
And Blair beat all that was put for him to account for five of the club’s eight gold medals, with the others coming courtesy of Rosie Munnings (two golds, two silvers) and Callum Blair (1 gold, two bronzes).
The other Otters members to medal were: Bailey Crisp (2S, 1B) Thea Irvine (1S, 2B) Amber Daly (1S) Elliot Barkway (1S) Max Ashken (1S) and Matthew Munnings (2B).
On the same weekend, Diss Leisure Centre played host to the Senior Fenland League Final – a six-team event.
From very early on in proceedings it became clear that the battle for the top prize would be between hosting Diss and their March Marlins counterparts.
At the halfway point of the gala, March led by just five points, and by only four points going into the final set of relay events.
The eight-swimmer squadron relay brought the evening to a close and with the lead changing hands seemingly on every length between the two leading teams, the spectators were treated to a thrilling climax.
However, the home team were just denied victory by the Marlins, who squeaked home by a margin of just three points to clinch the top prize.
The final standings were: March 226, Diss 223, St Neots 167, Bottisham 148, Mildenhall 90 and Huntingdon 24.
Next up for the club is the Diss Otters Club Championship, which will take place over the next two weekends, followed by the Diss Otters Open Gala. That is due to be held at UEA Sportspark in Norwich on Sunday, October 13.
