Diss, Old Buckenham and Topcroft Cricket Clubs all represented in Norfolk Seniors team at Six Counties event in Malta
Players from Diss, Old Buckenham and Topcroft Cricket Clubs helped the Norfolk Seniors team to reach the final of the Six Counties tournament on the Mediterranean island of Malta at the weekend.
Diss’ Andy Gregory, who captained the team throughout, shone in the first game against old rivals Essex, scoring 21 runs with the bat before going on to take 3-37 with the ball in hand to help Norfolk get off to a winning start.
Gregory again produced the goods with bat in hand in the second outings versus Kent & Surrey, finishing unbeaten with 45 runs alongside his name as Norfolk booked their place in the semi-finals of the competition.
Having set their opponents 169 to win, Norfolk went on to bowl tightly, helped by Topcroft’s Harold van Zanten, who ended with figures of 0-16 from his six overs in the 60-run triumph.
However, the final proved to be a step too far for Norfolk, who also included the Old Buckenham duo of Ron Ashdown and Mike Banham within their ranks.
After struggling to accumulate 123 runs all out, Norfolk’s opponents Yorkshire reached their target with relative ease, despite skipper Gregory (1-10) weighing in with another wicket.
On a more positive note, Norfolk were awarded the Performance of the Tournament – presented by former England spin-bowler Shaun Udal – while the team’s Bryn Clarke (Winterton) was named the Best Batsman.
