Promotion hopes in tatters as Tangerines lose at home
THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE
Diss Town 0
Cornard United 2
Diss’ hopes of securing promotion to the Premier Division were all but ended on Saturday as Cornard claimed all three points at Brewers Green Lane.
The Tangerines had been in the top three earlier in 2017, but a run of five matches without a victory has seen them drop down to ninth, 14 points adrift of the play-off places with three games in hand.
In a relatively lacklustre first half, the only talking point came when Cornard broke the deadlock.
Jack Marshall was the player that scrambled the ball over the line, though there was a suggestion that the Cornard player had used his hand.
Adam Burroughs returned from a long injury lay-off in the second half, but despite going close with one shot, his presence failed to spur Diss into life.
Instead, it was the visitors that extended their lead following a mix-up between the home side’s goalkeeper Lewis Riches and Luke Appleton.
Tomorrow, The Tangerines face a tricky trip to Halstead Town, who are three places and four points better off in sixth position.
n Diss Town Under-18s lost 4-3 on penalties to Lakeford Rangers in the Thurlow Nunn Youth League Cup.
Jack Simpson gave Diss a 72nd-minute lead, but that was cancelled out by Rangers, taking the tie into a shoot-out.
n Debenham LC picked up a 4-1 win from their trip to March Town United on Saturday.
Ryan Gardiner helped himself to a brace, while Paris Tuwizana and Tom Harrod were also on target for Mark Benterman’s team.
However, they were unable to build on that triumph away at Benterman’s former side Halstead Town on Tuesday, with the hosts running out 1-0 winners.
Debenham’s cause was not helped by the red card handed to Harrod in just the 10th minute.
Tomorrow, the 15th-placed Hornets will play host to Braintree Town Reserves (eighth).
When the sides met in January, Braintree’s second string won 3-1, with Tuwizana scoring for Debenham.
