Nathan ‘the Wizard’ Potter from Beccles produces magical comeback in final to win 2024 Suffolk Super Series at Stonham Barns Park
Beccles’ rising star Nathan Potter lived up to his ‘Wizard’ nickname as he produced a magical comeback to win the 2024 Suffolk Super Series title at Stonham Barns 6-5 in a tense decider at Sonham Barns Park.
The final stage of the mid Suffolk venue’s major countywide darts tournament took place last month where it incorporated a free to enter Suffolk Super Series Youth Open for under-21s and under-16s for the first time, thanks shop sponsors John Hogan Darts.
The senior event itself covered seven Grand Slam events held across seven different venues with a £7,000 prize pot.
Organised by Evolution Darts – with the support of Target Darts – competitors came to play the final at community vene The Barn from all over corners of the county.
Throughout the year players gained points for how far they got in each event with the top 32 on the series’ points table qualifying for finals day.
The qualifiers included 2023 champion Jason Elvin, Debenham’s England international Jo Locke and seniors World Championship star Kevin Edwards.
Number one seed for the finals was former PDC star Jack Main but rising star Nathan ‘The Wizard’ Potter ended up stealing the show.
He recovered from a first group game defeat to take the 2024 Suffolk Super Series title by beating fellow Suffolk county player Stefan Morling in a last leg decider, 6-5 on December 7.
Potter won event 1 of this year’s competition to come through the toughest group seen at finals day including Kevin Edwards, Gary Butcher and JJ Wright.
Morling had it no easier, coming through a group that included Wayne Bugby, Frankie Ansell and Graham Peck.
Potter made steady progress to the semi-finals beating reigning champion Jason Elvin and Wayne Bugby without dropping a leg.
Morling also made rapid progress to the semi-finals, dropping just one leg in each match while beating Chris Denny and JJ Wright.
The semi-finals themselves proved to be much harder with Morling overcoming an on-form Martyn Moore 5-2 and Potter coming through a last-leg decider to beat Rober Butters 5-4.
The final was full of tension and thrills with Morling making the early running, leading 3-0 and and 4-2 before Potter really dug in to win four legs on the trot to lead 5-4.
The 10th leg was a testament to Morling’s character on the oche as he held his nerve to take it to a decider.
With so much riding on one leg the players still scored heavily but it was heartbreak for Morling as three missed darts at a double proved costly.
Potter went on to hit the winning double to take the title of Suffolk Super Series Champion 2024.
Darren Moyes, from organisers Evolution Darts, said: ‘We were delighted with the final of the Super Series tournament at Stonham Barns Park which has hosted some massive darts events over the course of the year.
“It was a great atmosphere with everyone together to witness the crowning of the best of the best from 2024.
“It was really fun and all the showmanship that goes with a top darts event and we look forward to doing it all again in 2025.”
