A veteran swimming instructor at Stradbroke Swim and Fitness Centre declared “age is not a restriction, it is a challenge” after bagging an impressive haul of 11 medals at a major swimming tournament.

Len Phoenix, 66, won five golds, five silvers and one bronze in the men’s 65-69 age bracket during the Midland Masters 2015 swimming championships at Royal Leamington Spa earlier this month.

Phoenix, who is also a long-time member of Stowmarket Swim Club, was first in the 200m and 400m freestyle, 200m and 400m individual medley, and 50m butterfly, took second place in the 100m freestyle, 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and 100m individual medley, and secured third in the 50m freestyle, across the three-day event.

“I was absolutely over the moon,” he said.

“I think I came into it at the right time.

“It was just a great meet and I was absolutely shattered by the end of it.”

This haul takes Phoenix’s tally for the year so far to 54 medals, comprising 17 golds, 27 silvers and 10 bronzes, which has been achieved over the course of seven different Masters swimming championships held in 2015.
