Norwich City column: Praise for Lucien Mahovo and delight at Johannes Hoff Thorup’s willingness to trust young players

When I think back to last summer, one of the most exciting things about the appointment of Johannes Hoff Thorup was his willingness to put trust in young players and enable them to develop.

Under recent head coaches, it had felt like opportunities for youngsters were few and far between, and often only arose when dictated by factors such as injuries.

But this year has certainly had a different feel to it. Kellen Fisher didn’t take long to usurp Jack Stacey as first choice right-back – while in recent weeks Lucien Mahovo has burst onto the scene on the opposite defensive side.

There are others; Gabriel Forsyth would have certainly played more minutes had it not been for injury, while Oscar Schwartau has featured more than some might have expected.

But it’s Mahovo I want to focus on after an impressive performance during last weekend’s 4-2 win over Stoke.

Despite a real lack of experience, the biggest compliment I can give Mahovo is that he looks like he belongs at this level. He’s big, physical and technically very assured.

It’s easy to forget that prior to joining in the summer, the 19-year-old had just two Notts County appearances to his name, one in the EFL Trophy, along with a handful of games on loan to non-league clubs.

Mahovo’s progression since then has been nothing short of remarkable and he is well on his way to establishing himself as regular fixture in this team.

Of course, like any youngster, he will have difficult moments – such as in the games against Derbyand Preston. But the fact Hoff Thorup has continued to show faith is testament to the level of support he is willing to give young players, support that will only encourage them to thrive and grow.

And make no mistake about it, for the long-term success of this club it’s important that these players do go on to fulfil their potential. Under Hoff Thorup, you wouldn’t bet against it.
