Norwich City column: England youth international and Manchester City loanee Jacob Wright showing he can be key for Canaries next season
For all the talk about players with potential, there are few with a higher glass ceiling than Jacob Wright.
The 19-year-old joined on loan from Manchester City in January with just four senior appearances to his name, all of which came from the bench in cup competitions.
That lack of experience was evident in his first few games, as he took time to adapt to Championship football.
But in recent weeks, the England youth international has really started to excel, culminating in his best display in yellow and green, against Sunderland on Tuesday night.
A game that despite the 0-0 scoreline, was reasonably entertaining and yielded a decent performance.
There is something very elegant about the Manchester-born midfielder. He is simple, yet progressive with his passing – setting the tempo for those around him.
Wright is also not afraid to put his foot in, displaying the combative skills needed to succeed in the Championship.
He reminds me of a young David Fox, a massive compliment in my eyes.
Of course, like with any young player, there is plenty of room for improvement. But that is an exciting prospect for a very talented young man.
Once the season draws to a close, I’m sure it will be a formality to activate the option to purchase Wright, for a fee reported to be around £2.3million.
There seems a genuine appetite from all parties to turn the loan into a permanent move, something which would be incredibly welcome as we look to improve upon this fairly disappointing campaign.
With five games to go, the goal for the rest of this season has to be to give as many minutes to Wright, and the likes of Amankwah Forson, Ruari McConville and even the lesser-spotted Matej Jurasek, as possible. To help them develop.
Because these are players who will have an important role to play come August, when the quest for promotion will start once again.
