Norwich City column: Former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere making early impression in interim charge at Carrow Road

If the final two games of the season are Jack Wilshere’s audition to become Norwich City head coach, he will certainly feel one step closer to the job after last weekend’s 0-0 draw at Middlesbrough.

Given all the circumstances surrounding the trip to the north east, it was a valiant performance from the Canaries, and one in stark contrast to those we have become accustomed to in recent months.

Of course, it was far from perfect, but it was full of fight, passion and effort. The minimum requirements, some might argue.

I don’t know who comes up with these stats, but I’m told we made a combined 44 tackles and interceptions at The Riverside – the highest total of any game this season, and more than double the previous two games.

I wrote last week that I would be against Wilshere being given the job on a full time basis, and perhaps I was a little hasty in that assessment.

I still carry reservations about his lack of experience, but everyone has to start somewhere, right?

He is certainly an impressive talker and if he does end up getting the gig, he’d have my full support.

On to the last game of the season, and Wilshere will be desperate to enhance his case by beating an already relegated Cardiff City.

It promises to be an emotional afternoon at Carrow Road, as we wave goodbye to Angus Gunn, who is to leave the club at the end of his current contract.

Because of the family connections, and his love for the club, it always felt like Gunn was destined to be number one some day. I’m pleased he was able to live that dream, even if it hasn’t yielded the on-field success we might have hoped for.

I wish him nothing but the best as he moves on to pastures new.

The same goes for Onel Hernandez and Jacob Sorensen, both of whom have played important roles in our recent history, the Cuban in particular.
