NORWICH CITY COLUMN: ‘Canaries gear up for relegation showdown’

Norwich City fan Edward Seaman looks ahead to a massive game for the Canaries’ survival hopes.

It would be dangerous to label tomorrow’s match against Sunderland as a winner takes all encounter but it is near impossible to play down its magnitude.

Such is the nature of this time of the season, each game becomes bigger than the last but there’s just something about tomorrow; it almost has the feel of a relegation play-off.

And with the way the table is set, that’s how it will be built up in the press.

A second victory in as many home matches against one of our North East rivals would lift City seven points clear of Sam Allardyce’s men, and at least six clear of the drop zone, albeit having played one more game.

A defeat however and City’s Premier League future hangs precariously in the balance.

I don’t think there’s much we can take from the Crystal Palace game except that it will be home comforts that will be the difference come May.

On the trip to Selhurst Park, it was a nothing game and it took a goal out of nothing, one moment of quality, to sink City. Lets just all cross our fingers and pray Timm Klose’s knee injury is not serious.

Should he not make it, it is key that Ryan Bennett and Sebastien Bassong build on the solid foundations laid down in recent weeks.

Having watched the Black Cats this season, I think if you can isolate Jermain Defoe, you shut down their scoring threat. To do that, City’s centre halves must stay tight to the 33-year-old and keep a organised line to stop him breaking clear.

I mentioned home comforts and that is something that Alex Neil’s side must take advantage of. The Black Cats have shipped 39 goals in 16 away games this season, picking up just two wins.

So once again, lets create a cauldron of atmosphere (with or without the clappers), pile the pressure on our visitors and roar the boys onto victory.
