Debenham LC's summer signings have history with the club

Debenham LC have made their first two signings of the summer – and both players have history with the club.

Midfielder Matt Aldis and striker Jay Cole are the players in question, with the duo having featured during Saturday afternoon’s 2-0 pre-season friendly defeat at higher-league Mildenhall Town.

Aldis will be no stranger to those at Friends Meadow, with his father Mel having had a successful spell as manager between 2003 and 2011.

He ended last season with fellow Thurlow Nunn League First Division North outfit Diss Town, and has also had a stint turning out for Framlingham Town.

Debenham boss Guy Hayes said of Aldis’ arrival: “His dad obviously managed the club for a long time so he knows all about us.

“He’s a Debenham boy and that was a big factor in bringing him in. He is here for the right reasons and wants to be competitive.

“He can play holding midfield or go box-to-box – he’ll give us some good options in a key position.”

Cole, meanwhile, has joined from Premier Division side Whitton United.

The centre-forward scored twice last term, but prior to that he had been in red hot form for the Greens, scoring 57 goals across two campaigns.

And having played for Debenham at youth level, he will also be in familiar surroundings.

“Jay scored 36 goals the season Whitton got promoted from the First Division and I think that is the type of striker Debenham have been missing for a while now,” added Hayes.

“He approached us initially, which says a lot about him and it shows he is keen to get involved.

“He played for the club at youth level and also knows some of the lads in the squad from school.

“We want to be challenging for cups and improving on our league position next season, and having local lads involved will help us to achieve that.”
