Harleston Magpies Ladies first team gain place in next season's National League Division One with win over Sevenoaks
Harleston Magpies Ladies first team secured themselves a place in next season’s National League Division One thanks to a 4-2 home victory over Sevenoaks on Saturday.
The two sides headed into the contest level on points but with Sevenoaks the higher placed in fifth thanks to their superior goal difference.
However, it was Magpies that started the faster of the teams and they broke the deadlock early on when a slick passing move was worked to Emma Lee-Smith, who converted to put the hosts in front.
The response from Sevenoaks was positive and they soon hauled themselves level, only for Magpies to regain the lead through the league’s leading goalscorer Lauren Rowe.
The scoreline remained 2-1 to the hosts at the break and that advantage was further extended after the restart via Lottie Summers’ strike from inside the D.
Faced with a two-goal deficit Sevenoaks stepped up the pressure and managed to cause a number of problems for the Magpies defence.
As a result, the visitors won a number of short corners and from one of those they managed to pull back another goal.
In a bid to draw level, Sevenoaks opted to go with a kicking back but, after absorbing some pressure, Magpies made their extra outfield player count and on the break Lizzie Clymer was on hand to seal the outcome.
The victory – Magpies’ second over Sevenoaks this term – moved them up to fourth in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Conference East standings.
Next up for Magpies tomorrow is a trip to face a second-placed Wimbledon outfit who remain in the hunt for the title, two points adrift of table-topping Hampstead & Westminster (2pm). Magpies were narrowly beaten 4-3 in the reverse fixture.
