Mixed fortunes for Smith
Pulham St Mary-based stock car racer Billy Smith endured mixed fortunes in two race meetings in two different cars over the weekend.
Having starred in 1300cc Stock Car and Superstox machinery on tarmac tracks in recent weeks, he returned to shale-surface racing in two-litre Saloon Stock Cars at King’s Lynn’s Adrian Flux Arena, taking his newly-built car to an impressive win in his second heat, dominating the 30-car field.
However, mechanical issues struck after Smith had taken the chequered flag which left him unable to start the meeting final.
That proved to be a thriller and was eventually won by Simon Welton after a good tussle with Diss’s very own world champion, David Aldous. The lead changed hands between the pair on several occasions before Welton prevailed.
Smith was in action again the following day, this time at London’s Wimbledon Stadium. Giving his DK Technology-built Superstox car only its second outing, but former British Champion Smith was unable to repeat his success of the previous night.
