MISSION IMPROBABLE

DAUNTING TASK: Diss Town manager Mark Reeve
DAUNTING TASK: Diss Town manager Mark Reeve

With the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division season edging towards its climax, the Tangerines remain in a precarious position, currently sitting second from bottom and 10 points adrift of Wivenhoe Town, one place above the relegation zone.

Diss head into a home encounter against Newmarket Town tomorrow (3pm) on the back of a 1-0 win over Whitton United two weeks ago, and while Reeve is confident his side will not given up on the fight against the drop, he admitted their fate remains out of their hands.

“Our situation remains pretty desperate,” he said. “I think we need four wins from six to give ourselves a chance, if not we are certainly down.

“The problem is, even if we did manage to get four victories it still might not be enough because it is not in our hands.

“I knew the scenario when I took charge and although we’ve done relatively well, others around us have also picked up good points which has been unfortunate.

“However, I know the players are up for the challenge and with the characters I’ve got they will fight until the situation is impossible.

“We have to cling on to the fact we still have a chance and are not dead and buried yet.”

The absence from action has allowed the key trio of captain Jacob Brown and defenders Danny Self and Ben Lewis to regain full match fitness after carrying knocks, but Reeve has been dealt a blow with the losses of striker Kyle Downes, who has returned to Ryman League Division One North outfit Dereham Town and Jordan Atree, who has returned to Wroxham.

“It is a shame that we may lose the momentum of our last victory during the break but it has given players the chance to regain fitness,” added Reeve.

“Jacob, Danny and Ben are big players for us so it is handy to have them fully fit.

“It is a huge blow to lose Kyle; he has been brilliant for us, but he wants to play at the highest level possible and I can’t begrudge that.

“However, it gives others the chance to step up and try an stake a claim.”
