Mickfield racer Josh Webster returns to contest Porsche Carrera Cup
Former Porsche Carrera Cup GB champion Josh Webster has made a victorious return to the series after three years competing in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Championship, a support race for the Formula 1 championship.
The racer from Mickfield, near Debenham, said he was ‘still speechless’ to have qualified in pole position before going on to win one of the two races at Donington Park at the weekend, having missed the practice session due to an 11th hour deal with Team Parker Racing. He also missed Brands Hatch’s openers.
The 25-year-old signed a deal, with the backing of TAG Autosport, one day before he was due to take to the track in qualifying but is already in a strong position. He sits in fourth in his return to the championship he won in 2014.
He qualified in pole position in the damp conditions but lost two places in Round 3 as he finished in third in his first race in the British version of the competition since 2015. But he quickly settled, immediately bouncing back with the fastest lap on his way to winning Round 4 by a five second gap.
He said on social media: “Still speechless. Signed up to the Porsche Carrera Cup one day before qualifying after missing practice.
“Pole position in quali(fication) and then a win on Sunday.
“Huge thank you to TAG Autosport and Team Parker Racing for the amazing support. 2019 is looking good.”
Webster spent his reigning champion season with Team Parker Racing in 2015, finishing in third.
Ahead of the race, he said: “It’s really cool to be back and to run with number nine on the car, which is the same number I ran when I won the championship. I last raced in Mexico in October last year, but if I can use a bit of my experience from Supercup over the last few years, it will make me more competitive.”
The championship returns at Croft Circuit in June 14-16.
