Slough 0

Harleston Magpies 1

A second minute goal by Lizzie Clymer was enough for Harleston Magpies Ladies to secure a victory over Conference East league leaders Slough.

It was anticipated to be the Magpies’ toughest test of the season but after starting brightly from the start they caught Slough sleeping at the back.

Emma Lee-Smith fired a free hit into the D which found Clymer, who was unmarked, and she neatly slotted through the legs of the goalkeeper and stunned the opposition.

After the early set-back Slough re-grouped and begun to create their own opportunities to score, putting dangerous balls across the Magpies’ D and with their fast forwards making good high runs. Magpies defensive unit of Lucy Belsey, Kath Johnson, Katrina Sitch and Charlotte Lee-Smith stood strong, keeping out any of Slough’s chances, which included a number of short corners.

Whilst soaking up the pressure, Magpies created a few chances of their own to extend their lead but we’re unable to capitalise.

The Magpies went in at half time knowing that the job was far from over and they would need another solid performance in the second half to keep their lead.

Slough came out fighting and restricted the Magpies for much of the second half, but even being reduced to 10 players their resolute defending and an excellent performance in goal from Lee-Smith ensured Magpies retained their clean sheet and walked away with all three points.

Magpies will hope to continue their winning form into next week’s game against Hampstead & Westminster.

In very wet and cold conditions and despite countless efforts from the travelling Magpies team to score they were beaten by a single goal minutes before the final whistle.
