Magpies enjoy success in the In2Hockey Club event
Harleston Magpies were the hosts for the In2Hockey Club Championships that saw two of their youth teams claim the title of Regional Champions.
The Under-12 Boys’ team beat Old Loughtonians, from Essex, in the final after a tense penalty shootout to progress to the national finals in Nottingham, on May 14.
The Under-10 Girls also had success, taking the title of Regional Under-10 Girls Champions.
Teams travelled to Harleston from across the east including Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge City, Old Loughtonians and Sevenoaks.
The Under-12 Boys’ team progressed to the semi-finals against a confident Blue Hornets team which ended in a draw and went on to penalty flicks.
The Magpies boys won out with a brilliant save from their young keeper, securing their qualification for the national finals.
The boys battled on and secured success once again against a strong Old Loughtonians, with the match being won on penalty flicks.
Mark Emms, team manager on the day for the victorious Under-12 Boys said: “The last game was very tough against strong and confident opposition who played with great spirit.
“But our boys kept their heads and came away with a thoroughly deserved result.”
James Smith, Boys Development Officer at Harleston Magpies was thrilled with their performance on the day, saying: “This is a truly fantastic achievement for our boys’ Under-12 team.
“We will be training hard for the next couple of weeks now to prepare for the national finals in May.”
Also flying high this weekend were the Under-10 Girls, who carried off the title of Under-10 Girls Regional Champions.
The girls have had an amazing season, remaining unbeaten throughout.
Coach Kathy Gardens said: “The girls have been a pleasure to work with all season, so willing to try to put what we work on in training into practice and to learn and improve.”
The club’s Under-12 Girls’ team finished equal third after losing in the semi-finals to Canterbury, the eventual champions.
While the Under-10 Boys finished fourth in their pool in the event won by Old Loughtonians.
Club President Philippa Taylor was delighted with the results saying: “It’s an honour for the club to host the In2hockey Club Championships for the Eastern region.
“We are delighted with the success of our youth teams this weekend.”
