Harleston Magpies cruised to a 6-0 victory over bottom side Maidenhead to claim their first home win of the season at the fourth attempt.

Magpies started brightly, and after Emma Lee-Smith’s shot was illegally blocked on the line, they were awarded a penalty stroke which youngster Abby Gooderham fired home to put Harleston ahead.

The hosts controlled much of the early stages, dominating possession and putting the Maidenhead defence under huge pressure.

Magpies doubled their lead after good work from Lizzie Clymer to turn over possession high up the pitch, and after Gooderham’s initial shot was saved, Clymer was well positioned to slot home.

Midway through the first-half Lee-Smith picked up the ball on the 25, battled through the visiting defence and into the circle to score Harleston’s third goal of the game.

Just before the break the home side’s lead was further extended, with another driving run along the baseline from Gooderham resulting in a pull back for Hattie Sunderland to score her first league goal of the campaign.

The second-half continued much the same with the defensive unit of Lucy Belsey, Kath Johnson, Katrina Sitch and Lauren Barber absorbing any Maidenhead attacks.

Despite this the visitors thought they had pulled a goal back, but it was overruled by the umpire with the ball deemed to have hit a foot on its way to goal.

Sunderland found herself in space on the top of the circle and after the Maidenhead keeper was quick off her line, saw her miss-hit shot deceive everyone into an open goal.

Harleston’s sixth goal was well-worked, with Sophie Sunderland starting the passing move from the right of midfield and through the middle to find Maria Andrews in the circle, who calmly slipped the ball to an unmarked Hattie Sunderland to finish off her hat-trick.

n Elsewhere, an early goal from Krystal Jenkins was enough for Harleston Magpies Ladies VI to beat Watton Ladies III 1-0 at the weekend.

Magpies went in front in the early minutes of the game when the ball shot up the right wing to Julie Davy, whose deflected shot was pushed home by the quick thinking Jenkins.

Watton had numerous short corners to force an equaliser but the strong Harleston defence thwarted their strikes at goal.

A fairly even second-half saw both teams have chances to score, with more short corners for Watton while Magpies had shots deflected wide.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser but Harleston held firm to record their first win of the season in Empresa Norfolk League Division Two.
