Ipswich Town column: Loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford was the angriest I’ve been all season

Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. Two games we had to get some points in. Two games we lost without a whimper.

I was so disappointed ON Wednesday night. I think that’s the most angry I’ve felt all season.

We started brilliantly, got the goal, but then just sat off and invited the pressure, conceding two goals.

Their red card ( a shocker, by the way) gave us a lift and we got the equaliser. But that second half was one of the most infuriating I’ve seen all season and there’s been some disappointing ones.

I thought we were awful. Pretty in possession and kept the ball well, but where was the urgency? Where was the desire to score? Even with the man advantage, we never looked like scoring and that’s felt like a familiar feeling recently.

I get this league is tough. We were probably always going to be in this position. But this was one of the best chances we’d ever get to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford, especially with the fact they had a player missing for over half the game.

It’s so disappointing and for me isn’t an issue with the quality of the opposition, it’s an issue with the quality of our own.

Saturday’s defeat to Spurs wasn’t much better either. I really thought Portman Road would’ve been one of the main reasons we may have stayed up this season. Sadly it’s been the opposite.

What now then? It’s FA Cup action next and we need some kind of positivity.

Town have looked so depleted since victory over Chelsea in December and five points out of the last 30 would showcase that.

This group have shown they are capable of anything over the last two years. But I’m struggling to see how they can get us out of this one.

We’ll back the boys and we’ll keep going. Of course we will. But we need something in return boys.

If it is to be the Championship next season, then let’s at least try to arrive with some momentum.
