Ipswich Town fan Russell Claydon says: Still a piece missing in promotion jigsaw

So still the top spot eludes us.

The door was opened after Leeds’ win over Bournemouth on Tuesday.

But rather than the pressing getting to us in the 3-2 defeat at Brighton on Wednesday, it was more down to a side who burst into life under a new manager.

Before August’s kick-off you would have expected a free-flowing display like we were met with.

But for all our recent transfer activity, I couldn’t help thinking in Joao Teixeira they had a midfield magician the like of which should have topped our list.

I greeted Jonny Williams’ arrival with the belief he could be the key to unlock promotion, but injury meant that plan went up in smoke.

I would hate to see our promotion bid blown off course without a replacement though; a real creative wizard capable of goals.

Another box — pace — was ticked over the last seven days though, with the addition of Freddie Sears, who scored a poacher’s finish on Wednesday, as well as showing he can create too with a classy lay-on for Jonny Parr’s important third in the crucial 3-1 win at Millwall on Saturday.

The West Ham reject has a point to prove and although the two-and-a-half year contract from Colchester for a fee believed to be around £100k seemed a bit of a step away from the norm with Mick McCarthy, his 14 goals at Colchester suggest he can be an important addition to take the burden off Messrs Murphy and McGoldrick.

Kevin Bru signing a new deal was certainly great news, while Gerken’s was a bit of a surprise.

Despite three defeats in our last four in all competitions, we go into a 10-day break with 19 games to go in third, just a point off the top. We wouldn’t have believed it in August, so go on, sit back and enjoy the odd glance at that table...

* Outs: Jack Marriott (Colchester) and Anthony Wordsworth (Crawley) have gone on loan. Strikers Balint Bajner (Notts County) and Frank Nouble have been released from their contracts at Portman Road.
