Ipswich Town column: Promotion from Championship may have come quickly but Kieran McKenna’s side deserved Premier League place
Did we go up too quickly? With Ipswich Town’s season all but over, it's about that time of the year where we start to analyse what went wrong over these last nine months. And a few fans are questioning whether it all happened just a bit too soon for us.
Personally I don’t agree with that statement. We deserve to be here. Had we finished sixth and scraped our way up through the play-offs, perhaps I could see it. But the reality is Town absolutely bossed the Championship and thoroughly deserved their place in the Premier League. We’ve just fallen short when it has come to trying to stay here.
As it draws to a close, I don’t know how to feel about this season. The table tells you it’s been utterly miserable and for parts, it has been. But there’s been some immense highs in there. Tottenham away. The last minute winner at Wolves. Victory over Chelsea.
I think up until the new year we were well in the fight. But since then, we look to have really fallen short.
Did it all happen quickly? Yes, but is that the reason as to why we're going straight back down? No.
There are six games to go following Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea. I really enjoyed that game. We took a deserved lead was only stopped by a world-class equaliser. We probably should’ve won it.
Here's hoping the remaining matches see more performances like that, starting with Sunday.
We've seen many top teams come to Portman Road and blow Ipswich Town away this season. I'm hanging my hat on this game to be the one where things go right for us.
Perhaps it's the obsessive amount of Easter gggs consumed, but I have a strange feeling about Sunday.
Arsenal’s title charge is all but done and I’d imagine there’ll be some implications following their trip to Madrid on Wednesday night.
Wishful thinking? Probably. But I’m desperate to see at least one more Premier League win at Portman Road.
Town have lost their last six at home and remain without a single home point this calendar year. Let’s hope that changes soon.
