Ipswich Town column: Blues have to beat Southampton to stay in the Premier League
Last weekend’s trip to Liverpool was special, although the result wasn’t. I think Anfield, no matter how you feel about Liverpool, is one of the most special stadiums in the world.
I did feel proud to watch Ipswich Town play there. There's been a few times this season I think we’ve all stopped just to take a moment and comprehend just how far we’ve come. Saturday was another.
As I watched Sam Morsy lead the group out, I did feel really proud.
That said, Town will want to stay here and I’m sure in time, we all want these moments to feel less ‘special’ and more like the norm for us as a football club.
We fell way short on the pitch though, although I do think we were up against not only the future champions of England, but probably Europe too.
The Reds were impressive and we can take some positivity in ‘drawing the second-half’, although I hate to use that phrase.
Salah and co blew us away in the first half, but I guess I was happy to see us finish the second period strongly and to see us score.
I think we all know that our next fixture is really the game for us. This is gigantic and for me, the biggest game of our season so far.
We’re in January now, so Town need to start putting a run together if we’re to stay up and that simply has to start this weekend.
I think Saints have improved in recent weeks. The results haven’t, but they look a better side than the one we saw under Russell Martin.
I am a bit nervous. This is huge for us, but also equally as big for them and I do think they’ll be thinking it’s a game they can win also.
We’ve had many special days at Portman Road over the years and more often than not, this group has delivered on those occasions.
We need you to do the same again now, lads. If we want to stay up, we have to beat Southampton at home.
A special moment was made in this fixture last season, it simply has to be recreated in this one.
