Former Diss Rugby Club player Steve Hipwell helped Eastern Counties win through to their first Twickenham final since 2004 after a hard-fought 26-19 Bill Beaumont Cup Division Two North victory over Northumberland at Newcastle’s Kingston Park on Saturday.

The now Cambridge player played his part in a victory which secured promotion to County Championship Division One next season, where they will face fixtures against Lancashire, Yorkshire and Durham.

Hipwell has been named in the Counties team to meet South Group winners Surrey in the Division Two final at Twickenham on Sunday (10am).

In Newcastle, tries by Martin Wolfenden (Cambridge) and Murphy, both converted by James Stokes (Cambridge), plus three penalties for Stokes and one for Ben Penfold (Cambridge) proved enough to see Eastern Counties top their group with two wins from their two games.
