Toby Herbert wins Boxer of the Night award at Progress Boxing Club's home show
Gareth Edwards believes that teenage debutant Toby Herbert was a deserved winner of the Boxer of the Night award at Progress Boxing Club’s latest show.
The 14-year-old won on points against Spalding’s Mason Minall at the club’s show at Hope Church, in Diss, on Saturday, with the performance in his first bout earning him the prize.
“It was well deserved,” Edwards, the club’s head coach, said. “It was Toby’s first bout and he boxed really well. At six foot two he’s really tall for a 14-year-old and he used it to his advantage.”
Herbert was one of seven Progress boxers in action at the weekend, with Jimmy Ellwood also victorious and Malachi Flowerdrew and Jamieson Chambers both losing out on points.
The night started with Progress youngsters Harvey Garnham, 11, and 11-year-old twins Archie and Jake Boyce-Moore competing in skills bouts.
Flowerdrew, 13, then lost out to Ellis Bamsey, from Kings Heath, on points, before Ellwood, 14, won on points against Chalvedon’s Levi Crabb.
Herbert put in the performance of the night to defeat Minall on points, while in the final bout Chambers lost on points to Chalvedon’s Kevin Szymanski.
“It was a fantastic night,” Edwards said. “We had around 300 people there, so it was a full house.
“It was the second show we’ve put on at Hope Church, which is a good venue and we’ll be using it again for our next show in May.
“I just want to thank all the local support we’ve had and also to our coaches at the club Billy Ellwood, Steffan Coombes, Neil Sizer and Kieron Sizer for all the work they do.”
