Harling boss proud of players

Stacey Lawrence could not have been prouder of his East Harling players after they bowed out of the Norfolk Senior Cup at the hands of Thetford Town on Saturday.

The visiting Brecklanders play three tiers higher up the non-league pyramid than their hosts, but they were made to work hard for their 2-0 victory.

Both of their goals came after the restart, with East Harling creating – and crucially missing – some good opportunities to pull off a shock.

Nevertheless, having stuck to the game plan, Lawrence was pleased with the account his men gave of themselves at Church Road.

“I could not be more proud of the players,” he said.

“We stamped our authority on the game, frustrated them for long periods, and went with the game-plan we put in place.

“The goals we let in were a bit sloppy and that was disappointing, but overall I cannot be critical.

“We had a look at them at half-time and felt we could get something from the game.

“It was not to be, but the lads have done what was asked of them and that is the main thing.”

The Greens will now switch their attention back to their ongoing Hadley & Ottaway Anglian Combination Division One campaign, starting with a trip to Fakenham Town Reserves’ Clipbush Park tomorrow (2.30pm).

Lawrence’s side are currently eighth, but having racked up three straight league wins going into the weekend, are just four points off top spot.

And with a Mummery Cup quarter-final at Kirkley & Pakefield Reserves to come at the end of the month, the boss is keen for the players to build on their performance against Thetford.

“We should take good confidence from the game because our lads have matched players from three leagues above,” he added.

“We have been in good form, grinding out a win at Yelverton despite having 10 men for 88 minutes, and then beating Attleborough for the first time in ages.

“And when you factor in the Thetford performance, there is so much to be optimistic about. We want to be in the mix in the league and cup, so we need to keep up this form.”

Fakenham’s second string are one place and one point better off than East Harling, who have two games in hand on their opponents.
