Harleston Magpies Under-16s reach the final of the Junior Super 6s National Hockey Finals

Pride was the overwhelming emotion for all connected with Harleston Magpies after their Under-16 Girls team went all the way to the final of the Junior Super 6s National Hockey Finals at the weekend.

After opening up with a slender 1-0 defeat to Repton at the event in Wolverhampton, Magpies responded in positive fashion.

Back-to-back 3-0 victories over Cheltenham and East Grinstead saw them safely through to the semi-finals with a group game to spare, which ended in a 3-1 win at the expense of Thirsk.

The last-four encounter against Knole Park proved to be a nail-biting affair, one in which the lead changed hands on several occasions before a late penalty flick eventually secured Harleston a 6-5 win.

The final partnered them once again with Repton and for a second time it was the Derbyshire side that triumphed, coming out on top 2-0 to clinch the title.

Harleston team manager Jim Menzies said: “The girls played with such style and determination.

“I received many compliments from spectators, including the tournament director, England Hockey officials and opposition coaches.

“Our girls can hold their heads up extremely high, and the whole club is proud of their achievements.

“It was a superb effort by the entire squad and they should be congratulated for their efforts.

“They showed determination and spirit and maturity beyond their years.”
