Norwich City column: Amankwah Forson’s brace against Coventry could be turning point for summer signing after move from Red Bull Salzburg

Among all of Norwich City’s summer signings, Amankwah Forson has found the move to Norfolk the toughest.

The Ghanaian international, who only turned 22 on New Year’s Eve, arrived from Red Bull Salzburg with big things expected of him, given the relatively hefty price tag.

His early performances showed plenty of promise, but he has since faded into obscurity – despite the difficulties Johannes Hoff Thorup has experienced in midfield this season.

In fact, prior to his sensational cameo against Coventry last weekend, Forson had been an unused substitute in the previous seven matches.

That tells a story of a player who, despite possessing technical ability, has found it incredibly difficult to adapt to the rigours of the Championship – and what is being asked of him tactically.

What can you say about his brace against Frank Lampard’s side that hasn’t already been said?

Everything about it was remarkable. Two stoppage-time goals to turn defeat into victory, sparking wild celebrations, the likes of which Carrow Road hasn’t witnessed in several years.

That’s not to mention the sublime quality of the first goal.

The big hope is those seven or so minutes can prove to be the turning point in Forson’s Norwich career and bring him the confidence that he not only fits in at this level, but he can have a significant impact.

Of course, there is still much work to be done, but I hope Forson is rewarded with a start against Brighton in the FA Cup tomorrow – a match that could also see the long-awaited return of talismanic striker Josh Sargent.

It is important that Sargent’s return is well-managed to reduce the risk of further injury, but it will be a significant boost to have him fit and available for selection.

I would say it’s highly unlikely at this stage, but if we are to make a burst for the play-offs, we certainly need him firing on all cylinders.
