Harleston Town 2
Blofield United 1
A goal in each half from top goalscorer Scott Roberts was enough for Harleston Town to inflict a third defeat on Blofield United this season.
Harleston started the game superbly, playing some brilliant football in the opening 30 minutes, in what was probably their best passage of play so far this season.
Nick Howell missed a golden opportunity early on before Roberts opened the scoring on 20 minutes, after he pounced to slot home a rebounded shot with the Blofield goalkeeper having made the initial save.
Town thought they had been awarded a penalty shortly after the restart but the referee ignored the linesman’s flag, which was the first in a number of bizarre decisions from the man in the middle that frustrated both sides.
Despite their early dominance, Harleston went into half-time pegged back to level terms when Ben Morgan despatched an excellent free-kick for the visitors to make it 1-1.
The second period started fairly evenly, but after 50 minutes Town scored their second goal, which turned out to be the winner.
A ball over the top eluded everyone except for Roberts, who got a touch as the Blofield keeper came out to meet him, and the ball crossed the line.
The visitors had a couple of half chances to get back into the game, but the hosts always looked comfortable and held on to extend their unbeaten run to 12 games.
The win moved Harleston up to fifth in the Almary Green Anglian Combination Premier Division, although they are likely to have dropped down the table when they host third place Norwich CEYMS tomorrow (3pm).
With Blofield, Kirkley and Pakefield Reserves and Cromer Town set to all be in action during the week, Harleston were braced to relinquish fifth spot ahead of this weekend’s encounter.
Town are so far unbeaten in 2016, with their last defeat a 1-0 reverse to higher league Norwich United in the Norfolk Senior Cup back in November.
Harleston’s opponents this weekend visit in bad form having lost their last three games, which all but put an end to their hopes of a title push.
