THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE
Diss Town 9
Braintree Town Reserves 2
Diss Town responded to the recent call from manager Ross Potter to convert more of their chances by scoring nine times against Braintree Town Reserves on Saturday.
After a 1-1 draw with Stowmarket Town, a game in which Diss had a total of 17 shots on goal, Potter had challenged his players to make amends against their visitors from Essex — and they did just that.
It took them just two minutes to break the deadlock at Brewers Green Lane when Kyle Downes’ deflected effort from Jamie George’s knockdown found the back of the net.
Six minutes later Danny Self made it 2-0 with a shot low into the far corner, before George opened his account for the afternoon in the 21st minute from 15 yards out.
Within 60 seconds George had scored again, this time firing in a shot from the edge of the penalty area that the Braintree goalkeeper could not hold.
Potter’s men were unable to add any further goals to their tally before the break and they were then pegged back two minutes after the restart as Harry Watkins tapped in from close range.
Diss responded by restoring their four-goal margin in the 59th minute, with Downes claiming his second goal of the contest from an acute angle.
Sam Page made it 6-1 from close range 16 minutes from time before Braintree pulled one back through Kofi Gyebi.
Diss substitute David Norman rose highest to head in Joe Manning’s cross in the 87th minute and there was still enough time left for George to add a further two goals.
His hat-trick came from a Dale Barrett cross before he went on t0 bury a fourth goal in stoppage time.
n The Tangerines travel to the New Croft on Saturday to face Haverhill Borough (3pm).
n Debenham LC also hit the goal trail as they eased to a 5-0 win over Downham Town. The Hornets host high-flying Ely City tomorrow (3pm).
