Saffron Walden Town 3

Debenham LC’s winless run now stands at three matches as they lost further ground in the title race following defeat to rivals Brantham Athletic.

The third-placed Hornets started proceedings aiming to reduce the deficit to second-placed Walden, but quickly found themselves two goals down.

The first of which saw the Debenham back three caught out by a long ball as the visiting forward slotted the ball past the on-rushing Sam Chilvers.

Chilvers had to be alert to keep out two further chances but there was nothing he could do shortly after as a low cross was touched home for the visitors’ second.

That pressure persisted
as Chilvers was called upon again to tip away a deflected shot for a corner, while at the other end, Ben Golding saw a powerful low strike palmed away.

During the half-time break snow continued to fall heavily but play resumed despite fears of a cancellation.

And it was the home side who started the stronger as Golding saw another strike clawed away, while Robbie Kemp and Luke Austin also saw goalbound efforts blocked.

The momentum continued with Debenham as Golding spurned another opportunity, Kevin Barker put an effort narrowly wide of the post
and Tom Hardy let fly from all of 35 yards with his effort whistling wide of the target.

At the other end, Walden spurned a glorious chance to extend their advantage further but the Hornets could not take advantage as they continued to be wasteful in front of goal, particularly Fenner and Barker.

And it was the visitors who wrapped up proceedings as Chilvers was punished for a poor hurried kick that was seized upon and fired past him for the visitors’ third to seal victory.
