THURLOW NUNN LEAGUE FIRST DIVISION
AFC Sudbury Reserves 1
Diss Town 2
Diss Town bounced back from successive defeats to clinch a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at AFC Sudbury Reserves on Tuesday evening.
Having suffered a 3-1 defeat away at Leiston Reserves on Saturday, the Tangerines found themselves behind after 17 minutes when Charlie Gilbert did well to cut inside the box, and tucked the ball home past Lewis Riches.
Jack Newman looked to double AFC’s lead, with his narrow effort curve wide of Riches’ goal.
The visitors responded strongly to the setback and went close through Ben Fowkes and Jason Armes before the home side lost goalkeeper Louis Johnson with a suspected broken leg after 35 minutes with defender Toby Mitchell taking over in goal.
The visitors drew level just before half-time, as Daniel Self knocked the ball home from a Diss corner, with 42 minutes on the clock.
Early in the second half the home side were hit with a second injury as Jack Newman was taken off with a shoulder problem.
Liam Wales and George Clarke went close for the hosts while at the other end, Sam Page looked certain to give Diss the lead, but his effort was blocked well by Toby Mitchell.
However, with 20 minutes remaining Diss did find themselves ahead as Kyle Downes smashed the ball into the back of the net from a well crossed corner.
The home side almost drew level after 78 minutes following an excellent cross from Wales but Gilbert failed to finish, before the pair reversed roles soon after with Wales wasting a good opportunity.
The visitors finished the match strongly with Page spurning one final opportunity, slicing wide of Mitchell’s goal as Diss clinched a welcome three points.
n The seventh-placed Tangerines will now be hoping to build on that momentum when they host Leiston Reserves on Saturday (3pm) in the reverse of last week’s loss.
n Debenham LC will be hoping to halt a five-match winless run when they travel to Wivenhoe Town on Saturday (3pm).
The Hornets who drew 0-0 with King’s Lynn Town Reserves on Tuesdsy evening, will also hit the road again next Tuesday evening with a trip to Braintree Town Reserves (7.45pm).
