Coombs: ‘crowd can play big role’

Roger Coombs has declared home advantage could play a ‘massive part’ in helping Diss win their promotion play-off this weekend.

A bumper crowd is expected at Mackenders for Diss’ crunch clash against Chiswick tomorrow (3pm), with the winner earning a spot in London One North next season.

The Diss head coach is expecting their largest home crowd of the season and believes the club’s fans can spur them on to victory.

“They could play a massive part,” said Coombs. “It’s going to be a big crowd and for us the good thing is that we haven’t got to travel.

“Chiswick are coming up from London, which would have been difficult for us going over there to play.”

Diss have shown excellent form in their first season in London Two North East, but Coombs is wary of the challenge his side face in securing an imminent return to level six rugby.

“Not many clubs come down and go straight back up,” he said.

“It’s doable and is in our own hands.

“We’ve got one game to do it; it’s like a cup final.

“There will be no second chances.”

Diss’ opponents finished second in London Two North West to book their place in tomorrow’s play-off, despite conceding fewer points than champions Harrow.

“We’ve looked at a couple of videos of them to see how they normally play,” said Coombs. “We play a very open game which sometimes leads to mistakes.

“We could cut them out and not play that sort of open game, but we will be sticking to what we’re good at.”

Both sides have had two weeks since their final league games to prepare for this weekend’s showdown, with the fortnight break allowing Coombs to select a full-strength side.

“The boys are all up for it and can’t wait to play,” added the Diss head coach, who will assess the fitness of Joshua Ludkin and Tim Groom ahead of kick-off to see if they are both fit to start.

Diss from: Richards, Craven, Groom, Bergin, Cayley, Fuller, F Hall, Laurie, Burroughs, Peacock, West, Ludkin, Wilby, Holt, Trede, Cullum, Bray, Keppel.
