Borough stung by Hornets late show in draw

A late Ben Green strike cancelled out Ryan Swallow’s opener to snatch Debenham LC a share of the spoils against Haverhill Borough.

Possession in the first half was dominated by Borough but their inability to turn chances into goals, including a number of corners, failed to fashion any real end result.

Their first chance came from midfielder Scott Lodge in the 21st minute.

His volley from the edge of the penalty area went through a crowd of players and caught Debenham keeper Sam Chilvers by surprise initially. But he managed to scramble the ball away low to his left.

Borough striker Rory Bone was next to try his luck, his best chance coming just before half time.

An inch-perfect 50-yard pass from Lodge sent Bone through on goal, but his shot only found Chilvers again who blocked to ensure the game remained level at the break.

The second half saw more great work from the Debenham keeper as Borough centre back Cameron Watson saw his powerful shot palmed onto the hosts’ crossbar in the 52nd minute.

Chilvers though was finally beaten on the hour mark by Swallow.

Bone worked down the right hand byeline before drilling a powerful cross into the penalty area, Swallow swivelled before connecting sweetly on the volley with his left foot, leaving Chilvers only able to pick the ball out of the back of the net.

Debenham tried to get back into the game and finally got their equaliser in the dying minutes of the match through Green.

A long cross into the crowded Borough penalty area saw keeper Graham Smith punch the ball out, but it came back as quickly as it left as Green half volleyed the ball back past the goalkeeper to ensure the game ended in a draw.
