Charlie Jay and Isabell Price to represent Attleborough Boxing Club in England Boxing National Development Championships this weekend
Attleborough Boxing Club will have two of its members competing in the finals of the England Boxing National Development Championships this weekend.
Charlie Jay and Isabell Price are set to compete in the national competition’s finale, which is being held over two days at the Spiceball Leisure Centre, in Banbury.
Recently-crowned Eastern Counties champion Jay, 16, booked his spot in the semi-finals of the Male Youth 63.5-67kg weight class after a unanimous decision victory over Moulescombe’s Alfie Cracker in Kent on Saturday.
The Harleston-based fighter moves into the finals along with club-mate Price, 16, who will be moving up a weight class to compete in the Female Youth Cadet Under-63kg category.
“Charlie will be up against two top quality operators, one in the semi-finals and then another one if he makes the final,” Jon Dennis, Attleborough’s head coach, said.
“He had a 5-0 unanimous win on Saturday and we were pleased with how he boxed. He’s boxing well and he’s growing into the competition.
“His attitude is how it should be for a young, aspiring boxer.
“Isabell has had to move up a weight, but let’s go and give it a go.
“We’re the underdogs, but it means we’ll go in with a lot more bite.”
Tommy Pateman’s bid to reach the finals ended in disappointment after his quarter-final bout with Paul Coyle, of St Marys, ended in both fighters being disqualified.
Pateman was competing for a place in the semi-finals of the Male Development Class A 57-60kg weight class, but a controversial decision brought his and Coyle’s campaign to an end.
“It was bizarre,” Dennis said. “The acoustics were very loud and the boxers didn’t break when the referee asked them to.
“There was no caution or warning. It’s a learning curve for both of them, but they both exit the competition.”
Away from the Development Championships, Attleborough took four boxers to Aberdeen, with three of them making their amateur debuts.
Leon Emery and Jake Lambert both lost their bouts on points, while Tommy Jay, the brother of Charlie Jay, was victorious via a decision.
Attleborough’s Finn Harris took on Scotland’s Leo Jamieson, who was a silver medalist at the Tri Nations Championship, and produced an impressive display to win on points.
“It was a tremendous display from Finn,” Dennis said.
“He was up against Scotland’s number one on their home show and won a unanimous decision.
“I have to say the Scottish hosts (CAIN Boxing Club) were very welcoming and it was a great experience for our young lads.”
