Banham Zoo celebrates Mahiri the giraffe becoming first in UK to learn to use inhaler
A much-loved giraffe at Banham Zoo has made history as the first in the UK to learn to use an inhaler thanks to a pioneering delivery system.
Mahiri, a 16-year-old female reticulated giraffe, has lived with a chronic nasal condition for much of her life makes it difficult for her to breathe through her nostrils and has caused ongoing discomfort.
For the past three years, the zoo’s care team has been training her to accept treatment voluntarily — and she can now receive her medication willingly without the need for sedation or restraint.
Animal manager Deborah Harris said: “Giraffe as a species can be quite nervous of anything new, so introducing medical equipment takes enormous patience and trust-building.
“Our keepers adjusted daily routines and worked at Mahiri’s pace to help her feel comfortable.
“The fact that she now calmly accepts her inhaler is a real testament to the bond between her and her care team.”
Her new inhaler-based treatment builds on earlier work using a nebuliser.
The specially adapted equipment delivers precise doses of Salamol CFC-Free and Clenil Modulite 250 inhalers to suit her anatomy and clinical needs.
The treatment helps open her airways, reduce mucus build-up and support her long-term respiratory health.
Zoo staff say the achievement is not only a veterinary milestone but also a reflection of the compassion and commitment of the team caring for Mahiri.
Her progress is expected to provide valuable insights into improving giraffe healthcare worldwide.
