Banham Zoo praised for 'outstanding work' in inspiring next generation of conservationists
Banham Zoo has been praised for its outstanding work in inspiring the next generation of conservationists.
The popular East Anglia attraction was lauded for its efforts after passing an inspection for a new licence with flying colours.
Following a visit, council officers heaped praise on the venue for its work in helping to educate people around biodiversity, as well as its high standard of animal care.
Helen Crane, a cabinet member at Breckland Council, said: “I would like to congratulate the staff and volunteers at Banham Zoo for their exceptional animal welfare and conservation work, which I know is helping to inspire the next generation of conservationists within the community.”
By law, zoos are required to obtain a new license every few years. Council inspections look at how the site is suitable for the animals kept there, the standard of animal care, the safety of enclosures for the animals and visitors, how the site helps to educate people about biodiversity, and steps taken by the site owners to stop pests getting into the zoo.
Claudia Roberts, chief executive for Banham Zoo, said: “The inspection is, rightly, a very thorough process and we are delighted to have received such great feedback from the council.
“It’s been a difficult time for the charity recently, first coping with the financial pressures of Covid closures and then the financial pressures of the energy and cost-of-living crisis.
“We are very thankful for support from the Covid Zoo Animal Fund, Breckland Council and from all the guests who visit us to see the animals and learn about their habitats.”
