Water protest and petitioning in Diss this weekend

A protest is to be staged tomorrow, with residents coming together in a statement on local water quality issues.

The gathering is to take place at the Diss Mere from 11am tomorrow, with participants voicing their concerns over the alleged overspill of sewage into the River Waveney.

A petition on the matter will be passed around at the protest.

One of the organisers, Elana Katz, is a keen kayaker, and uses the River Waveney frequently.

She claims the river has persistent pollution problems: "When you get to parts of the river that really have a disgusting smell of sewage, it gets really upsetting."

Mrs Katz said of the protest: "People are getting a bit disgusted about the state of the river.

"We're trying to work with the town to encourage everybody to put their name to a petition - to MPs Richard Bacon and Dan Poulter, and anybody else in the area - to please represent us, in Parliament, and say, 'We're fed up with the quality of the water as it is, please do something."
