Villagers launch challenge against Greyhound pub in Tibenham after ‘public nuisance’ live events

Villagers have finally lost patience with a rural pub hosting noisy tribute acts.

Locals in Tibenham have demanded South Norfolk Council review the premises licence of the Greyhound, which they say has become a “public nuisance”.

The venue regularly hosts live entertainment, including Take That, Elvis and Michael Jackson tribute acts, as well as country music festivals and karaoke.

Following complaints, South Norfolk Council’s licensing committee will meet this week to determine whether tougher restrictions should be imposed on the venue.

The Greyhound reopened last summer under new ownership and locals say there have since been “large and frequent” live music and sports broadcast events held at the pub.

These are often hosted from an outdoor stage and continue late into the evening.

Currently, the owners are allowed to provide live entertainment until 1.30am on any night of the week.

Neighbours have banded together to urge the council to tighten these restrictions and limit the venue to hosting six outdoor events per year, in order to reduce “intrusive” performances in the summer months.

The pub has a packed schedule of events including quiz nights, karaoke, comedy nights and three-day-long festivals dedicated to country music.

Its events calendar has included performances by Elvis, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson, Rag ‘n’ Bone Man and Take That tribute acts in recent months.

Locals say live sports broadcasts in the garden have also exposed them to “foul-mouthed football chants”, which can be heard from neighbouring homes.

While the manager of the pub, Daryl Gaskill, says live music performances were intended to raise the profile of the newly reopened venue and will be held less frequently going forward, locals are seeking protection from the council to guarantee this pledge.

South Norfolk Council’s licensing committee will meet to discuss the Greyhound’s premises licence on Thursday.
