UPDATED: 2 Sisters poultry plant in Eye to change to halal slaughtering facility
A poultry processing plant in Eye is set to change into a halal slaughtering facility after its owner agreed a transfer with a new company.
Workers at the One Stop Halal factory in Letham, in Angus, Scotland, were informed of their facility’s closure last week, with the company saying alternative slaughtering facilities had been identified Eye.
Poultry giant, 2 Sisters Food Group (2SFG) currently operates the facility off Magdalen Street, which will be converted into the new halal operation.
One Stop Halal said 130 jobs were at risk of redundancy in Scotland, but in Eye a statement from 2 Sisters said that staff would be TUPE-transferred to the new facility. The transfer would mean that employee’s terms and conditions of employment would remain. One Stop said 215 people would be employed at Eye.
A statement from 2 Sisters said: “Following a strategic review of our poultry processing manufacturing footprint in the UK, the business can announce that it is proposing a transfer of the operations at its site in Eye, Suffolk, to another party.
“Existing employees at the site will be TUPE-transferred to this new business in due course. We will, of course, maintain a regular dialogue with all our colleagues to inform them of the handover process and timescales.”
A statement from One Stop Halal said: “We can confirm that as a result of a strategic review of our manufacturing operations, we have entered into a period of consultation with our colleagues at the Letham slaughtering site.
“The review identified that the location of the Letham facility in relation to the manufacturing facility in Haughley Park, Suffolk, adds significant supply chain complexities and reduces the ability for the business to react quickly to changes in customer and market demand.
“We propose to close the Letham slaughtering facility as alternative slaughtering facilities have been identified at Eye in the Suffolk region, close to our Haughley Park manufacturing site and we are looking to acquire these facilities in the next few months.
“The move of the One Stop Halal slaughtering facilities to operate from Eye will secure the future of the site, as there was a genuine risk that the site would close under 2SFG.”
town, depending on its size and location.
“In terms of Eye and in surrounding areas, I think it is really important that we have enterprise, industry and commerce of the highest quality,” he said. “If this company is of good quality standards then we are getting critical mass in terms of expertise and that must be to the good.
“Eye has a lot to offer. There are good facilities in the town centre, dentists, estate agents and good shopping, and also has one of the best high schools in the country.”
